The earliest known Carter ancestor in this line is Robert Carter who married Elizabeth Griggs. The couple lived in what is now West Virginia, but would then have been a part of Virginia. The couple had ten children together, including Edward Carter. Edward was born on August 1, 1796 in Jefferson, West Virginia. Edward first married Sarah Timberlake and together they moved to Kentucky where their daughter Sarah Timberlake Carter was born. In 1827, Sarah (the mother/wife) died, and on April 23, 1830 Edward married again. His second wife was Elizabeth Stanhope. Edward and Elizabeth had nine children together, including a daughter named Fanny born in 1832. In 1852, Fanny married James Alexander Headley, and they became the parents of Joseph Carter Headley, the grandparents of Elisabeth Headley Garr and Frances Headley Carruth, and the great-grandparents of Elisabeth Garr LawrenceCharlotte Garr Schubert, Frances Carruth Kerr and Allen Higgins Carruth
