Paul Richard Schubert was born on December 24, 1921 in Virginia to parents Paul Oscar Schubert and Ethel Lucille Huber Schubert. The family moved around from Virginia to Indiana before eventually ending up in Lexington, Kentucky. It was there that Richard completed high school, and in 1943 he graduated from the University of Kentucky with a degree in engineering. Beyond his education at UK, he attended the U.S. Naval Officer Candidate School in Rhode Island, where he was commissioned with the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. Richard served in the United States Navy for three years, spending his time on an aircraft carrier in the Pacific.
When his military time was over, he went to the Harvard School of Design to study architecture. On December 28, 1950, he married Charlotte Russell Garr. The couple first lived in Massachusetts while Richard completed his degree at Harvard, and then moved to Baltimore where he worked for an architectural firm. In the mid-1950s, the couple returned to Lexington, where both would live for the rest of their lives. They had two children together, sons Richard Allen and Charles Garr Schubert. Richard continued his architectural work in Lexington, designing the home where he and Charlotte raised their children, located at 13 Hampshire Place. Richard passed away in 2007 at the age of 85.
