Thomas Carter was born on February 1, 1699 in Lancaster County, Virginia to parents Edward Carter and Elizabeth Thornton Carter. Both the Carter and Thornton families were early settlers to Lancaster County and were prominent in the society of the county. In 1718, Thomas married Sarah Haynie, and together they had 13 children. Sarah died in 1750, and shortly after Thomas remarried to Anne Wale and together they had two children. Thomas died in Lancaster County, Virginia on December 3, 1776.
