Joseph Carter Headley was born on August 1, 1860 in Atchison, Kansas Territory to parents James Alexander and Fanny Carter Headley. He was the third child for the couple, joining an older brother named Edward Carter. The couple's second son, James Alexander had passed away as an infant before their third and youngest was born. In 1884, Joseph married Alline Higgins, and together they had two daughters, Elisabeth Higgins and Frances Carter. He made his living as a real estate developer, and Headley Avenue in Lexington is named for him. Joseph passed away at the age of 30 on August 25, 1890 after being involved in a carriage accident in Lexington.  The horse pulling the vehicle was spooked, and Joseph, Alline, and their daughters were thrown from the carriage. All survived but Joseph, who hit his head. He is buried in the Lexington Cemetery in Lexington, Kentucky.
