Joel Higgins was born on November 27, 1803 to parents Richard and Sarah Allen Higgins in Lexington, Kentucky. He was the first of two sons for the couple. Joel was educated at Transylvania University and went on to become a planter in Fayette County. He married Anna Louisa Gibson on April 8, 1823 in Warren County, Mississippi, and together they would have four sons, including John Allen Higgins. Joel along with his brother Richard were involved in the incorporation of the Lexington Cemetery, and it was in that cemetery that he was buried after his death at the age of 55 on October 27, 1859.

This is a contract from July 1836 for the purchase of land in Lexington, Kentucky by Joel Higgins. The land at the center of this contract is the spot where the Higgins Mansion stood.
